We have recently been on a 6 day trip leaving Perth to Alice Springs.
We travelled on day one along the Great Eastern Highway to Kalgoorlie then out to Menzies where we had a bush camp for the night.
On day two we visited the ghost mining town of Gwalia with all of its old abandoned buildings and artefacts, we then passed through Menzies and headed towards Laverton, here we stocked up on food and water and left the black top to start our journey on the great central road and the wide open spaces of the outback. Before long we spotted herds of wild camels, we stopped at an artesian bore for lunch and spotted wedge tailed eagles and camels. We set up a bush camp again for night two and lay in our swags under the stars after a hearty meal. I saw the milky way for the first time, the night sky was brilliant and the silence was amazing. We awoke to a cold morning but everyone was up and the fire stoked up for brekky and on the track again for more amzing desert landscapes. The couple of road houses we pass through have steel mesh cages around the fuel pumps, the stores have good stocks of basic food, drinks, sweets etc and were a welcome stop during the day.
Night three saw us camped in a dry river bed just before the NT border, Terry our driver cooked some roo tails in the embers of the fire for our international friends to try, they were a little apprehensive at first but all had taste of our national emblem.
The next day we crossed the NT border and mid morning Kata Tjuta came into view after stopping to take some distant photos we went to the formations and went of a walk, it was an amazing place, though a little chilly at that time of day. We then headed to Uluru and set up a camp at the camp ground and yes we all headed for a shower and a shave after 3 nights out in the desert.
Nearing sunset we headed out to the Rock to view the spactacular sunset over the rock and the changing colours, the camera worked overtime. The following morning it was early rise and brekky then out the rock to view the equally impressive sunrise at Uluru.
A visit to the Visitors Centre and a nice warm latte after 0C temps and we were on our way to Kings Canyon.
A stop at Curtin Springs roadhouse and views of Mount Connor, then on to Kings Creek Station where we set up camp for the night and yes showers again. We did the Canyon walk after lunch which was a truly spectacular walk around the rim of the canyon.
We headed back to camp collecting some fire wood along the way to share our last night together around the camp fire.
We set off on our last day headed towards Alice. We left the bitumen road onto the Earnest Giles road which was extemely rough, it was adventure time again, we stopped at Henbury meteor craters and had lunch before joined the black top once more and the 130kms to Alice. Arriving in Alice mid afternoon we were dropped off at our various caravan parks and later that night met up for a farewell dinner and traded e-mail addresses and farewells after 6 wonderful days traversing the outback.
Western Xposure ran a great tour and we highly recommend it.
