With the best of the snow season on the horizon, there's no better time for Aussies to grab a great deal and experience New Zealand both on and off the slopes.

NZ has more resorts than you can shake a ski pole at, so if you're unsure where to go we've compiled a quick overview of some of New Zealand's top ski destinations.

In 2013 the ski areas are planning on opening from early June for the season.

The Remarkables – Queenstown, South Island

Located just above Queenstown, The Remarkables is one of the best known ski fields in New Zealand. The highest ski field in Queenstown at 1935 metres, the Remarks have something for everyone - skiers, snowboarders, telemarketers and even cross-country skiers.

Cardrona Alpine Resort – Wanaka, South Island

Cardona is another fantastic South Island ski field located near Wanaka, which is 5 hours drive from Christchurch and an hours drive from Queenstown. Cardrona is made of 3 distinct bowl areas, with terrain for skiers and snowboarders of all ability levels. It's also has great facilities for the kids.

Coronet Peak – Queenstown, South Island

Just 18km northeast of Queenstown, Coronet Peak is renowned for its long ski seasons and fantastic terrain. If you get easily distracted by stunning views, you need not worry because the white powdery snow will soften your fall. It's a great spot to take the family, with it pretty common to see young children as tall as your knees flying down the mountain like professional skiers.

Turoa Ski Area – Mt Ruapehu, North Island

The south facing slope gets plenty of dry powder during the season, making Turoa the perfect alpine playground for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. There are ample beginner runs if you’re just starting your love affair with snow, plus intermediate and advanced when you get more confident.

Mt Hutt - Canterbury Plains, South Island

High inside the eastern rim of the Southern Alps, Mt Hutt has the largest skiable area in the South Island. There are several black diamond runs to satisfy those with a thirst for adventure, plus heaps of open terrain for first timers (and the uncoordinated). Snowmaking starts as early as mid-May.

Treble Cone – Wanaka, South Island

Treble Cone is a mountain that welcomes all snow lovers - long uncrowded groomed slopes, legendary off-piste terrain, and unrivalled views. Treble Cone boasts the longest vertical rise in the Southern Lakes and views over Lake Wanaka and Mount Aspiring/Tititea.
