The black out hit at 9.20am (AEST) on Wednesday forcing passengers to wait as the airport grounded all flights from its three terminals.

The power outage caused all electronic systems to fail, even cutting off power supply to food and service operators inside the terminals. Power was gradually restored and Melbourne Airport used twitter to inform the public flights were operating again.

“Airport services are being restored. Some delays as operations continue to recover” Melbourne Airport tweeted.

Qantas relied on back-up power to remain in operation, with Jetstar experiencing small check-in delays.

A Virgin spokeswoman said flights were temporarily grounded by the blackout, with passengers experiencing minor delays.

The reason behind the power failure remains unknown.
