It might be colder than a vampire's heart outside, but that just means it's time to strap the skis on and head to Australia's best ski fields.
There are lots of fun events happening in the snow this season at Mount Buller, Falls Creek and Mount Hotham, so get your diary out and start planning some fun activities.
If you prefer to ski by the light of the moon, try your hand (or feet) at night skiing and snowboarding, held Wednesdays and Saturdays between 7pm and 10pm on Mount Buller's Bourke Street run. If you prefer something for the family, tobogganing is always a fun activity in the snow for kids of all ages.
Also suitable for the family is the guided snowshoe tour, a professionally guided tour along the village track with outstanding views across to Mount Stirling. Most tours provide the snowshoes, as well as warm drinks like hot chocolate and tea to warm your fingers as well as your body. If you want to do it yourself, you can hire snowshoes from one of the many rental outlets on the mountain.
If an adventure in the sunshine is more your style, Mount Buller is guaranteed to offer an unparalleled extent of lake, riverside and mountain scenery. Campers, hikers and fishing fans as well as skiers will have a blast here on one of Australia's major ski fields.
Falls Creek is just three and a half hours from Melbourne by car and a short flight from Sydney. Ride the chairlift to the top of Falls Creek and don't forget the camera, or if you’re skiing, why not invest in a helmet-mounted camera so you can capture your impressive moves? The chairlift gives you access to a host of mountain trails, so be sure to pack your energy nut mix and a flask of hot drink.
Every year at the start of snow season (June), hundreds of daring people take part in the Ice Plunge, which has become a bit of an institution at Falls Creek. People run into the icy waters and then warm up again afterwards with a group breakfast. Seems pointless? Maybe, but why change the habit of a lifetime?
A scenic chairlift ride to the top of Mt Higginbotham offers the chance to take in some seriously spectacular scenery, or for the little ones, children can have a mini-adventure in the great outdoors on the Junior Mountain Biking path. It's one way to wear them out so you and your partner can sit back with a glass of wine, or observe the best up-and-coming local bands and artists in the annual Cool Summer Festival. This three-day festival will wow you with its beautiful views, set across multiple stages.
The Big D chairlift opens at 10.30am until 3.30pm and tickets to ride are just $5 each way in cash. You'll love taking in the views and breathing in that fresh air away from the city. At Easter each year, you'll find the entertaining Geebung vs. Cuff 'n' Collar Polo Match at Cobungra Station, during which wine and food is served along with live music, helicopter rides and a Heli Easter Egg Drop.
Fashions on the Field brings Mt Hotham to life with more live music, and for the explorers, almost 550km of the best mountain bike trails in the Victorian High Country.Related Links -
