Skytrax have revealed their 2012 list of the World's Best Airlines. More than 18 million passengers were surveyed at airports around the world, and the results are a little surprising.

Qatar Airways has taken out the award for Airline of the Year for the second year in a row, with Asiana Airlines and Singapore Airlines coming in at numbers two and three respectively.

Qantas has dropped out of the top 10 to number 15, down from last years eight. Virgin Australia on the other hand has surged to number 12, up from last years 32.

Air New Zealand has fared even worse than Qantas - dropping to 17th position from last years seven.

Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted said the awards were "something of a victory over the more established legacy carriers that have previously taken the top prizes in these categories".

Several other awards were also announced, including best first-class (Etihad), best lounge (Qantas – SYD), best business-class (Cathay Pacific), best best inflight entertainment (Emirates) and best low cost carrier (AirAsia).

The World Airline Awards are determined by passenger surveys conducted by research firm Skytrax, who surveyed more than 18 million passengers in 160 countries.

Surprised not to see Hawaiian on the list as they are providing services we used to get for free with airlines.

Qatar and Asiana deserve the top two spots; however, I would put Asiana into the number 1 spot. I have never encountered such pleasant, cheerful and polite flight attendants - not to mention hard working. During a recent overnight trans-pacific flight I was amazed to see attendants bring trays of refreshments down the aisle every 10-15 minutes and noted that calls were answered within seconds. And every ounce of service given with genuine smiles from competent YOUNG staff. Qatar's service is also excellent but not quite as polished. As for Qantas, 95% of the "old dears" that are still working in customer service should be forced to do some mandatory service training...with Asiana or another Asian or Middle Eastern Airline

Last time I flew Cathary Pacific, I thought they were not good at all. The food, service and interior were pretty average. I'm surprised they beat Qantas, where everything was up to standard each time I used them. Agree with Singapore airlines, each time I've tried them they were great and most of the time Emirates too
