Australia Post (131 318) runs the country's mail system. They are relatively efficient and reasonably cheap.

Sydney's general post office (GPO) is in the grand Victorian building on Martin Place. A GPO counter service (+61 (0)2 9244 3700) is around the corner on 130 Pitt Street.

Sending mail stamps are sold at post office counters, Australia Post retail outlets, and post offices operating from newsagencies. To send a letter or post-card within Australia it costs 45c. To send airmail letters to the Asis-Pacific region it costs $1.00 and airmail letters to the rest of the world costs $1.50.

Parcels can be sent throughout the world. Available to Europe and the USA only is seamail. Different parcel sizes incur different costs and there is a 20kg maximum weight. Airmail is available to Europe, the USA and the rest of the world but is considerably more expensive. Again different parcels and also different destinations incur different costs and have a maximum of 20kg weight.

Post offices are open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm. Larger post offices, such as the GPO, and newsagencies also open Sat 10am-2pm.

All post offices hold mail for visitors and city GPO's have a poste restante sections. If you hold an Amex card or Amex travellers cheques then you can arrange to have your mail sent to American Express offices in big cities.
