Nelson Bay is a seaside resort town just 2hrs north of Sydney, known for its gorgeous white beaches, clear waters, subtropical climates and prolific wildlife, and with endless panoramic views in every direction.
Home of the Port Stephens fishing fleet, Nelson Bay is also the departure point for dolphin watching tours. More than 160 bottlenose dolphins call the local waters home, and Port Stephens is also the port-in-passing for over 3000 migrating whales each year.
Keeping up with the times is the Nelson Head Inner Lighthouse which has been operating since 1872. Previously lit by a kerosene lamp, it now runs on solar energy. The cottage offers local history, marine info and refreshments.
Other highlights of the Nelson Bay area include water and nature based activities, such as fishing, scuba diving, and exploring untamed natural wilderness and the extensive sand dunes of Stockton Beach.
