Dent Island is one of the 74 islands that make up the Whitsunday Group. Dent is located immediately west of Hamilton Island. The initial charts of the Whitsunday region showed only one island, called ‘Passage Island’ where Dent Island and Hamilton Island presently lie.

It was not until 1866, when a Commander of the Royal Navy carried out a comprehensive survey of the Whitsunday Passage, that the maps were modified to show two individual islands. Dent Island was named after Lieutenant Albert Dent of the HMS Salamander.

Presently, Dent Island is the perfect destination for a Whitsunday holiday, being so close to Hamilton; it is popular with day-trippers and campers. The island is predominantly national park.
