The Pantanal is the world's largest wetland, located in central South America and covering areas in Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. It is also one of the world's most immense and rich ecosystems. The Pantanal has the greatest concentration of fauna in the Americas and is an ecological paradise, with hundreds of species of birds, thousands of varieties of butterflies, a myriad of brightly-coloured flowers, and shoals of fish. Capuchin and Howler monkeys, capybaras, macaws, anacondas, caimans and tapirs help create an aquatic and sylvan theatre of sights and sounds. The endangered jaguar, and increasingly rare Hyacinth macaws and giant river otters all call the Pantanal home.

The Pantanal supports high concentrations and many species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, as well as invertebrates and plants. Over 650 species of birds alone have been identified, as well as over 80 mammals, 50 reptiles, and 250 species of fish. The concentrations in which these are found help make the Pantanal an extraordinary habitat for ecotourism, field research, aesthetic inspiration, and ecological education. The Pantanal harbours the worlds' largest jaguars (weighing in at over 140 kilos), the world's largest parrot (the majestic, cobalt-blue Hyacinth Macaw), the world largest toucan (the Toco Toucan), the world's largest otter (the Giant Otter), the world's largest anteater (the Giant Anteater), the world's largest rodent (the guinea-pig-like, 120-pound capybara), South America's heaviest land mammal (the Brazilian Tapir), and the world's heaviest snake (the Anaconda)!

You will need somewhere to stay on the Pantanal, and the completely renovated Pousada Xaraes Resort is located in one of the most beautiful geographical regions of the Pantanal, the Abobral region. The Pousada has been recently remodelled and adapted to meet all standards of quality and comfort. 340 km from Campo Grande and 140 km from Corumb, Pousada Xaras is situated at the margins of the Abobral river in a private area of 4,200 hectares of pristine nature. The 17 spacious apartments are distributed in 3 separate buildings, just a few metres from the Abobral River. All apartments are equipped with ceiling fan, air-conditioning, telephone, mini bar and private bathroom, secure and decorated in a rustic style.

From the apartments you can hear the songs of the Pantanal birds and the emotive howling of the monkeys that inhabit the trees at the margin of the Abobral River early in the morning. Pousada Xaraes offers horse riding around the Pantanal. Other activities you can do to explore the Pantanal are 4x4 safari trips, canoe trips, trail walking, bicycle rides & catching and releasing fish.
