A travel guide's 2013 "hot list" has beggared belief with some of the places that made the cut. Even the residents of one town included in the Rough Guide's list say they must have made a mistake.

The publication's hot list combines the writers and editors picks for where people should head to next year.

The English coastal village of Margate in Kent was the choice of web editor Tim Chester.

He describes it as a "gem" with cute cafes, vintage shops and indie art spaces.

"Margate now offers much more than its golden sands and dilapidated seaside charm," he wrote.

But some locals say Margate’s inclusion on the hot list is "totally ridiculous".

Robert Spires says it's not a place people like to live in "let alone go on holiday to".

"If this guide causes tens of thousands of people to descend on Margate from around the world I am afraid they will be very, very disappointed," he told the Daily Mail.

"Margate is run down, half of the shops are closed or in the process of closing down, there are yobs on every corner and amusement arcades all over the place."

Another odd inclusion on the list is a Spanish festival called Nowhere near the north-east town of Zaragoza.

Rough Guide publisher Jo Kirby chose the event as an easier alternative to the famous Burning Man festival in Nevada (easier only if you're over that part of the world we suppose).

Here's the full list.

North Cyprus
Stockholm, Sweden
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Kosice, Slovakia
Dresden, Germany
Northeast Iceland
Margate, England
Valparaiso, Chile
Puerto Rico

Nowhere (festival in the desert of northern Spain)

There are so many must see places around the world - Australia is great but it doesn't have places like Carcasonne in France with the castle or the quaint villages of Cornwall which I love to visit ans so many more places . If you get to the airport early to book in and travel with a friendly attitude you shouldnt have too many problems and you will see some amazing places that you will never see in Australia . I do agree that you should explore Aussie as well - Ningaloo Reef WA for snorkeling ( No need for a boat ) and the Kimberley is awesome as well as many other places .

Anybody going to Dubai, Qatar or anywhere there, be very careful behaviour-wise. A few Aussies have been jailed in Dubai for disorderly and drunken behaviour. The Muslim countries don't take kindly to this at all but there are places in Dubai where a lot of people can go dancing and enjoy themselves without getting into trouble. An Aussie girl reported being raped by a hotel porter and she was thrown in jail for it, so girls beware!

Why bother going overseas? Australia's got a lot of beautiful places to see and at the same time we spend money in our own country. I went on a working holiday to South Africa in the 70's and it was beautiful then but now I won't go anywhere overseas, too many problems with flights etc. I've also lived in South Melbourne then we moved to Sydney in 1965! My next trip will be Perth, Adelaide, Tassie, Qld to name a few......

Ignore anything Rough Guide says at anytime. They are a second rate publication and are a total waste of time and money. It's amazing they are still in business.

Valparadiso? Youve got to be joking. The women are so unfriendly and god damn jealous, if you have blonde hair, not only will they ignore you, they will shoot you death stares and murmer insults under there breath. Its as boring as hell too.

All these types of lists are subjective jokes. Especially Melbourne being a livable city.
