This shortcut through the heart of Australia is half the distance of driving around the coast and a real adventure. The run from Laverton to Warburton and the border takes in remote savannah and desert country.

Certainly an adventure and it connects to the Golden Quest Discovery Trail.

The Outback Way has more than30 interpretive panels telling local stories and 34 hidden caches of the Outback Way-finder Geocache Trail. Travellers need a handheld GPS to find a "treasure" hidden at latitude-longitude coordinates.

Then it's on to the Central Australian ranges, indigenous art, wildlife, wildflowers, gem fossicking and bird watching. Many travellers will prefer to camp along the way but there are five-star resorts at Yulara, hotel/motel accommodation and caravan and camping sites at roadhouses, and station stays. Roadside stops provide free camping along the entire Outback Way.

The Outback Way passes through remote regions with limited communications, repair services and supplies. Travellers should be well prepared.

WHEN
Best from April to October. There are high temperatures and rain from November to March. Travellers should check road conditions when stopping at roadhouses and not carry on if the road ahead is closed. Camp before sunset.
