A European holiday cruise has turned sickly for hundreds of passengers as a vomiting virus swept through a massive ocean liner, reports British media.

Crew members of P&O's Oriana taped off areas of the ship "like a crime scene" while passengers said the liner smelt of sick, British tabloid The Sun reported on Wednesday.

While P&O management said nine cases of norovirus had been confirmed, reports of up to 300 ill passengers have come from on board the vessel.

"There might be a riot because the captain and crew refuse to listen. We'll refuse to disembark unless we get some answers. It's been a cruise to hell," British passenger Dave Stringer, 57, told The Sun.

A statement from the cruise company said: "enhanced sanitation protocols have already been implemented".

The liner, carrying more than 1800 people, sailed on December 4 for a tour of Christmas markets at Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Oslo and Hamburg, and is due to dock at Southampton on Thursday.

This seems a typical problem with P & O. We went on a cruise on Pacific Dawn in October 2012 and there was a similar severe outbreak. Many of the common toilets were overflowing and/or didnt work. Our cabin toilet overflowed 2 times (adjoining cabin 5 times) This was also a cruise from hell. When you include noisy room A/C's, , dirty washing machines, ...... We will NEVER sail with P & O again.

Totaly agree with you Robert, but don't just blame the lazy kids. Their parents are also lazy. The women love to have children, but not so keen to discipline them.

Years ago parents taught there kids basic hygiene like wash your hands after the toilet, and before meals, use a hanky for a runny nose or if you sneeze. It's why we are dealing with these nasty viruses, people are just too stupid or lazy.I have seen the filthy pickers at sizzlers and other buffets, they need their hands amputated with a blunt saw.

Wouldn't go on a P&O cruise again.EVER.Got sick two days after boarding.Never been that sick in my life!Had to struggle in weakened state to Medic station,as Doctor wouldn't come to cabin.Sent unaided back to cabin for remainder of cruise. No follow up,no help.Tried to claim back cost on insurance, but P&O responded they had no record of me attending Dr.Weeks of bed rest and antibiotics. No apology,no help and no response from P&O.NOT worth the risk!!!

Im very surprised with this as I have been on 13 cruises with P&O and Princess (all sailing from Aust) and everytime they have been strict with hygeine, so strict that they have people dispensing at the restuartants and buffet. Ive seen people who were trying walk past staff that were refused entry until they had sanitized. Its sad that the cruise industry gets a bad repuation here in Australia for events that seem to be happening all to much in Europe. Surely being the same group they should all have the same procedures.
