Southwest Airlines has settled a huge class-action lawsuit over its decision to stop honouring drink vouchers, even if they were bought in advance.

The settlement could be worth as much as US $29 million.

According to the Chicago Tribune, an Illinois man brought the class-action suit against the airline on behalf of himself and any other Southwest customer who pre-purchased drink vouchers before the airline altered its policy on expiration dates.

The man reportedly bought tickets through Southwest's "Business Select" program and collected free drink coupons that did not specify a use by date.

On Aug. 1, 2010, Southwest Airline changed its policy, meaning the vouchers were only good for the day the person was travelling - thus making all previously issued vouchers worthless.

When the lawsuit was reported by the LA Times in 2011, a Southwest airlines spokesperson said the decision to add an expiration date was prompted by passengers making unauthorized photo copies of the vouchers.

It's estimated that there are 5.8 million eligible vouchers that were never redeemed. Even if eligible passengers don't have their vouchers anymore, the settlement allows them to redeem new ones.

    Surely person(s) that consume alcohol, can refrain from drinking in flight. I agree with Ghost Hunter that some people should not indulge in alcoholic drinks. Bear in mind that jets are still confined and a level where a person becomes an IP (Intoxicated Person), can become dangerous. Perhaps their policy should be amended to stop alcohol being served in flight. As for their present plight, To bad so sad.

    It would probably be cheaper for the airline to give everyone who has a valid voucher a flight ticket discount per voucher the next time they fly. I liked the pathetic excuse - "People were photocopying vouchers" - what sort of people do they employ who cannot tell the difference between an airline-issued voucher and a photocopy? Even then, starting up an expiration date should not cancel perfectly valid issued vouchers.

    Personally I don't think "Booze" should be allowed to be served on any airline as I myself have personally been affected be more than one drunk passenger on a plane.Most airlines employ female hostesses and what chance do they have restraining an agitated drunk when they decide to start a fight.It's either left up to other passengers to intervene or the pilot or co-pilot have to leave the cockpit to sort the problem out which inturns endangers not only the other passengers but the plane itself.One wonders?????

    Let's all get pissed while we're flying ! We can give the crew a hard time - starts fights - and go straight to jail when the plane lands ! Let's face the truth - there are bogans out there who should never be fed booze at all - let alone as part of in flight service. This time however, the whole thing seems to be far more related to the company trying to save itself money by refusing a service that has already been paid for !
