An airline calendar featuring women in skimpy bikinis and hot pants has sparked controversy – and this time it isn't Ryanair.

Budget Thai carrier Nok Air has enlisted a team of models from Maxim magazine to pose for a raunchy promotional calendar.

Thailand's Culture Ministry permanent secretary Prisana Pongtatpitakkul says companies’ use of women's bodies as a marketing ploy threatens "female dignity".

"They lack the sense of social and cultural responsibility and ignore social and cultural repercussions," she told newspaper The Nation.

But Nok Air chief executive Patee Sarasin is not fazed by the criticism and says requests for the calendar have been flooding in.

"The airline business has always been seen as sexy globally, that is why our planes - we believe they are well designed - appropriately become the background of these models.

“Given what the public is exposed to on a daily basis, we believe that we have not crossed the line."

Ryanair's charity calendar differs in that the models are flight attendants employed by the budget airline - and they wear lingerie.

The suggestive poses by women in hot pants have caused controversy.

These don't appear to all be Asian so the Lady boy idea might not be correct. Sad isn't it that there are so many prudes in the world in 2013. I thought the days of wearing neck to knees were gone. I must say though that some of the girls today leave a lot to be desired when it comes to their dress sense. They have no idea how to look attractive and sexy while still covering up. Much better to imagine what she has than see it all hanging out.

I work at a university and I see gals like this walking around the place every day. People have pretty much learned to shut their trap on matters like this. Hmmm then again... perhaps they don't wear the sunglasses, but the rest looks like standard 19 year old attire. When gals strut this stuff on RAAAGGEEEEee (the Aussie all night kook bag Music show), does anyone even notice. Whats the problem or is there one?
